Until March 15, Madrid becomes the international capital of design with the eighth edition of the Madrid Design Festival. Featuring nearly 200 activities, 20 exhibitions, and more than 80 OFF spaces, Open Studios, and showrooms, this edition once again places the city in a privileged position within the global design and creativity scene.
Under the theme "Redesigning the World," the festival establishes itself as a platform promoting design as a tool for dialogue, reflection, and problem-solving in contemporary society. The program not only explores design from an artistic and technical perspective but also delves into its intersections with science, fashion, music, art, and craftsmanship. Additionally, the festival highlights social issues such as depopulation and youth loneliness, showcasing the power of design as a catalyst for change. This year, Berlin is the guest city at Madrid Design Festival. Recognized as a UNESCO City of Design since 2006, the German capital boasts a rich architectural and artistic tradition, spanning from the Bauhaus movement to postmodernism and the holistic futurism of the ICC Berlin.
The festival’s main venue will be the Fernán Gómez Cultural Center of the Villa, hosting the central exhibition "The Line Dreams", an exploration of light and space featuring 45 artists and 70 works from creators such as Davide Groppi, Michael Anastassiades, and Massimiliano Moro. Additional exhibitions will be held at the Museo Cerralbo, the National Archaeological Museum, the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, the Spanish Film Archive, CaixaForum Madrid, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and the Casa de México Foundation in Spain. Another highlight will be Madrid DesignPRO, featuring internationally renowned figures such as Sir Paul Smith, Patrizia Moroso, Mario Cucinella, and Kavita Parmar, who will discuss the role of design in urban and social transformation.
One of the greatest attractions of Madrid Design Festival 2025 is its extensive program of activities. From the opening event "This is Not a Building," an immersive experience combining art, music, and design, to exhibitions that explore the relationship between tradition and modernity, such as "Artisan Legacy: Castilla-La Mancha – Weaving the Clay." Material exploration and innovation will also take center stage with the "Material Bank Workshop," an initiative inviting architects and interior designers to discover new textures and applications for sustainable materials. The dialogue between architecture and art will be addressed in the "Confluence of Art and Architecture", a masterclass led by the DAVIDDEDAVID studio and art historian Mabel Vivas. Additionally, the workshop "Art as a Transformer of Spaces and Creator of Experiences" will explore how art enhances and humanizes interiors, providing a deeper cultural connection in everyday life.
Madrid is home to some of Spain’s most exclusive residences, where design plays a key role in differentiation and added value. Notable examples include a property designed by José Luis Canosa Magret in La Moraleja, balancing harmony and functionality through its integration with nature; this residence by Ignacio Vicens in La Florida, redefining the relationship between architecture and landscape with privileged views of Monte de El Pardo and the visionary creation of Fernando Higueras in La Moraleja, a pyramid-shaped house suspended on concrete, blending art and comfort into a truly unique space.
