Art galleries: a journey through the avant-garde of the capital

In addition to its grand museums, Madrid is home to a vibrant art gallery scene, where both emerging artists and established names can be discovered. Galería Marlborough, located at Calle Orfila 5, is one of the city's most prestigious galleries, focusing on contemporary art and representing an impressive list of artists, including figures like Fernando Botero and Manolo Valdés.
Another noteworthy gallery is Elvira González, located at Calle Hermanos Álvarez Quintero 1, known for its selection of modern and contemporary artists such as Eduardo Chillida, Miquel Barceló, and Donald Judd. Juana de Aizpuru Gallery, at Calle Barquillo 44, is a pioneer in promoting contemporary art in Spain, with a strong focus on conceptual and performance artists.
Galería Helga de Alvear, at Doctor Fourquet 12, is renowned for its focus on international contemporary art, representing artists like Ai Weiwei and Thomas Ruff. Galería Nieves Fernández, at Calle Blanca de Navarra 12, has been promoting contemporary art for over 40 years, with a focus on sculpture and installation. Galería Elba Benítez, at San Lorenzo 11, combines contemporary art with interdisciplinary projects, ranging from visual arts to architecture and film.
Lastly, no discussion of galleries in Madrid would be complete without mentioning Galería Leandro Navarro, at Calle Amor de Dios 1, specializing in modern Spanish art, with works by great masters like Picasso, Miró, and Tàpies. These galleries are not only art sales points but also exhibition spaces that contribute to the cultural and artistic dialogue in the city.

Reina Sofía Museum

A few steps from the Prado, the Reina Sofía Museum completes Madrid’s so-called Triangle of Art. This museum, inaugurated in 1992, focuses on modern and contemporary art, with a collection spanning from the late 19th century to the present day. Its most famous work is undoubtedly Picasso’s "Guernica," a monumental painting that has become a universal symbol of peace and an indictment of war.  In addition to Picasso, the Reina Sofía boasts an impressive collection of works by Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, as well as renowned contemporary artists. The museum is housed in a historic building that was once a hospital, with a modern extension designed by Jean Nouvel that hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The combination of history, modernity, and avant-garde makes the Reina Sofía an essential destination for art lovers.

Prado Museum

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, also part of the Art Triangle, offers a different experience from the Prado and Reina Sofía. Its collection, which was privately owned by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family until its acquisition by the Spanish state in 1993, spans seven centuries of art history, from Gothic to Pop Art.  Among the highlights are Ghirlandaio’s "Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni," Edward Hopper’s "Hotel Room," and Degas’s "Dancer in Green." The Thyssen is known for its stylistic diversity, with a collection that includes both old masters and modern artists, offering a comprehensive journey through art history. Additionally, the museum hosts high-level temporary exhibitions that attract a sophisticated and discerning audience.

Sorolla Museum

For those seeking a more intimate experience, the Sorolla Museum is a hidden gem in Madrid. Located in the house and studio of painter Joaquín Sorolla, in the elegant Chamberí district, this museum offers a unique insight into the artist's world. Sorolla, known as the "painter of light," captured the beauty of the Mediterranean in his paintings, and the museum houses a vast collection of his works, as well as personal objects and original furnishings.  The house, preserved as it was during the painter's lifetime, reflects his personality and love of light and color. The gardens, designed by Sorolla himself, provide a peaceful haven in the heart of the city. This museum is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the world of an artist through his personal and creative environment.
